The problem with the traditional job search process

The problem with the traditional job search process

I’ve read SO many articles about job seekers, who have been out of work for a year or longer, and they just don’t understand why, because they’ve applied to hundreds and hundreds of jobs.

We’re groomed to believe that the job search is a numbers game — you have to apply to at least 200 jobs before you’ll land a job — that’s an actual stat.

Before you apply, you must customize your resume to the job description, using a resume AI-optimization tool, so it gets through the ATS, and then customize your cover letter with ChatGPT or some custom “AI” tool you pay a monthly subscription for.

But then it’s a year later, and crickets.

The only email you get back, if you even ever receive an email, is from the no-reply email address rejecting you, with zero reason as to why.

The modern job search process is frustrating and depressing, and it feels like it’s never going to end. And exacerbating the already mentally depleting search is the fact that most families and significant others just can’t empathize with your situation.

You're not alone.

40% of unemployed workers have been searching for 15+ weeks. Tech job searches average 247 days (8 months).

Enter my proven job search strategy

Four steps. Way more fun. Way more effective.

Last year, I landed a $250K total comp in less than 30 days using this exact strategy.

Step 1: Create or optimize your digital footprint.

At the bare minimum, you need a portfolio of accomplishments — this can be anything from a well-written, organized Google Doc to a beautiful website (ideal) — and a complete and active LinkedIn.

94% of recruiters use LinkedIn to vet candidates.

Nearly 90% of employers say that they visit a portfolio website when given the option.

I like to use startups.gallery to find companies to target.

Step 2: Find companies to target.

Next, you’ll look for recently funded startups, with a skills gap you can fill. You’ll learn everything you can about the company, and find ways you can add value.

Step 3: Develop a creative proposal.

Once you’ve done your due diligence, you’ll organize the information into an easy-to-digest proposal, which details specific ways you’ll help them reach their business goals.

Step 4: Reach out.

Lastly, you’ll find, ideally, the right founder’s email address, or any way to contact them, and send them a little video introducing yourself and your proposal. You’ll know if/when they open your email, click any links, and/or watch your video because you have installed an email and link tracker, and your video provider will tell you when your video is viewed.

Why my approach works

Aside from actually getting your foot in the door, my job hunt approach is way better for a few reasons.

Zero Competition

You’re not competing with hundreds of other applicants because you’re creating opportunities, not applying to them.

Expanded Network

Every outreach expands your network with cool people who might need your skills now or connect you with someone who does.

Real Feedback

99% of the time you’ll get an actual response explaining why or why not—much easier to stomach than automated rejections.

Portfolio Gold

Even “no’s” give you foundation for publishing concept case studies—content that creates inbound opportunities.

Outsource your job search to an expert job hunter (ME)

I’m not a certified career coach, but I know how to land a job.

Hi! I'm Lauren Holliday.

I’ve worked remotely for tech startups for 14+ years, mainly in marketing. I’ve written for basically every mainstream media outlet except the New York Times (still working on that one!).

I’m not a certified career coach, but I AM seriously good at landing jobs. Why? Because I’m great at marketing, writing and lateral thinking.

What’s lateral thinking? While vertical thinkers use conventional methods (like applying to job boards), lateral thinkers take unconventional approaches—like finding backdoors to jobs you create yourself.

You don’t need a resume optimizer or AI application tool. You need a polished online presence and a different approach. Lucky for you, I can help with both.
